Nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden has created several lists of healthful foods people should be eating but aren’t. But some of his favorites, like purslane, guava and goji berries, aren’t always available at regular grocery stores.

  1. Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters. Beets are one of the best sources of folate, a nutrient which lowers your blood levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory amino acid produced by the body. One cup of beets provides only 60 calories, no fat, about 40 percent of your daily value for folic acid and four grams of fiber.

How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad by tossing them with olive oil and a splash of lemon. Heating decreases the antioxidant power.

  2. Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes. Part of the cruciferous vegetable family, one cup of chopped cabbage contains 20 calories, two grams fiber and is loaded with sulforaphane, a cancer fighting chemical that’s been shown to decrease cellular damage throughout the body. Add cabbage to your salads, order steamed ‘moo shoo vegetables’ at your local Chinese restaurant (request sauce on the side and go easy!), or prepare low-calorie coleslaw.
How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches.
  3. Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with carotenoids that protect aging eyes. This vegetable’s greatest health benefit comes in the form of lutein and zeaxanthin - a matched pair of antioxidants - found in high concentrations in the tissue of the macula. Because they absorb 40 to 90 percent of blue light intensity, these nutrients act like sunscreen for your eyes. Studies have shown that eating foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin can increase the pigment density in the macula-and greater pigment density means better retina protection, and a lower risk of macula degeneration. One cup steamed Swiss chard provides only 35 calories. How to eat it: Over high heat, warm two tablespoons olive oil in a large, non-stick frying pan. Add two cloves garlic and cook one to two minutes, stirring constantly. Add two pounds Swiss chard and sprinkle with kosher salt. Cook four to five minutes until the Swiss chard is soft and reduces half in volume. Serve immediately.
  4. Cinnamon: May help control blood sugar and cholesterol.
How to eat it: Sprinkle on coffee or oatmeal.
  5. Pomegranate juice: Appears to lower blood pressure and loaded with antioxidants.
How to eat: Just drink it.
  6. Dried plums: Okay, so they are really prunes, but they are packed with antioxidants.
How to eat: Wrapped in prosciutto and baked.
  7. Pumpkin seeds: The most nutritious part of the pumpkin and packed with magnesium; high levels of the mineral are associated with lower risk for early death.
How to eat: Roasted as a snack, or sprinkled on salad.
  8. Sardines: “Health food in a can.’’ They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.
How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.
  9. Turmeric: The “superstar of spices,’’ it may have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
How to eat: Mix with scrambled eggs or in any vegetable dish.
  10. Frozen blueberries: Even though freezing can degrade some of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, frozen blueberries are available year-round and don’t spoil; associated with better memory in animal studies.
How to eat: Blended with yogurt or chocolate soy milk and sprinkled with crushed almonds.
  11. Canned pumpkin: A low-calorie vegetable that is high in fiber and immune-stimulating vitamin A; fills you up on very few calories.
How to eat: Mix with a little butter, cinnamon and nutmeg.

In my own house, I only have four of these items — Cabbage, Cinnamon, Pomegrante Juice, Turmeric. How about you? Have any of these foods found their way into your shopping cart?

Windows 7 : Is it really worth?

Windows Vista, showing its new Aero Glass inte...Image via Wikipedia

Windows 7

(formerly known as Blackcomb and Vienna) is the working name for the next major version of Microsoft Windows as the successor to Windows Vista. Microsoft has announced that it is “scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year timeframe”, and that “the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar.” Windows 7 is expected to be released by 2009 or near January 2010. The client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. A server variant, codenamed Windows Server 7, is also under development.

Microsoft is maintaining a policy of silence concerning discussion of plans and aspirations for Windows 7 as it focuses on the release and marketing of Windows Vista, though some early details of various core operating system features have emerged. As a result, little is known about the feature set, though public presentations from company officials have disseminated information about some features. Leaked information from people to whom Milestone 1 (M1) of Windows 7 was shipped also provides some insight into the feature set.

Features

Windows 7 has reached the Milestone 1 (M1) stage and has been made available to key partners. According to reports sent to TG Daily, the build adds support for systems using multiple heterogeneous graphics cards and a new version of Windows Media Center. New features in Milestone 1 also reportedly include Gadgets being integrated into Windows Explorer, a Gadget for Windows Media Center, the ability to visually pin and unpin items from the Start Menu and Recycle Bin, improved media features, a new XPS Viewer, and the Calculator accessory is multi-line featuring Programmer and Statistics modes along with unit conversion.

Reports indicate that a feedback tool included in Milestone 1 lists some coming features: the ability to store Internet Explorer settings on a Windows Live account, updated versions of Paint and WordPad, and a 10 minute install process. In addition, improved network connection tools might be included.

A new feature in build 6574, Windows Health Center, allows the user to monitor all of their PC’s health problems, and concerns in one place. It allows turning User Account Control on and off, and monitoring 3rd party anti-virus programs, firewalls, etc.

In the demonstration of Windows 7 at D6, the operating system featured multi-touch, including a virtual piano program, a directions program and a more advanced paint program.

Indian Share Markets : Impact of Repo Rate Hike

The Bombay Stock Exchange in India.

Image via Wikipedia

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hiked repo rate by 25 basis points to 8% with immediate effect but not changed reverse repo. RBI measures will partially help in containing inflation by reducing the available liquidity. This is really an unexpected decision from RBI and severe setback for Banking, Auto and Real Estate stocks. But RBI and Indian Government efforts to contain inflation may fail as crude oil price is surging northwards. Next policy meeting of RBI will be held on July 29th.

What is CRR?

Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) is the amount of money banks need to deposit at RBI. Increase in CRR reduces circulated money (liquidity) and this fall in liquidity will generally strengthen currency (rupee) and getting loans from banks will become difficult. Increase CRR generally shows more effect on retail lending than corporate lending.

Impact of repo rate hike on Indian economy:

1. Inflation will fall in the coming weeks if crude stays below $ 130 per barrel.
2. Rupee will strengthen against dollar.
3. There will be some effect on the margins of companies due to unavailability of cheap funds.
4. Bond yields will rise and stock markets will fall.
5. Major impact is on retail lending but marginal impact of corporate lending.

Impact of repo rate hike on Indian Stock Markets:

1. Banking: Even though investors expected CRR hike, bad sentiment will drag these stocks to new lows. Inflation figure will hurt banking stocks on Friday. So new lows for this worst affected sector. Banks will raise interest rates in the coming days. No one knows about exact derivative losses.

2. Real Estate: Tightening of liquidity will adversely impact this speculative sector. Expect new lows for DLF and Unitech.

3. Automotives: These stocks will suffer due to tightening of retail lending and interest rate hikes by banks.

4. IT stocks: Rupee will strengthen against dollar but Barrack Obama’s positive statement on “outsourcing” is a positive signal. We have to wait and see how these stocks will react.

Verdict: Impact is more mainly due to pull back rally on Wednesday and “Friday inflation fear”. Bad sentiment in the global markets is another worrying point. Rise in crude oil prices coupled with CRR hike may drag Indian Stock Markets to August 2007 lows. Nifty may lose more than 100 points in today’s fall. Unless international community contain speculation in crude prices, world stock markets will see new lows due to slow down in economies. Emerging markets like India and China will suffer more due to current surge in crude oil prices.
